The Ghana National Party (GNP) says the President should not grant pardon to public officials who have been convicted under the law on causing financial loss to the state. The Law on Causing Financial Loss to the State was passed in 1993 as amendment to the Criminal Code. Some public officials were jailed under the law and later granted pardon when the President exercised his prerogative of mercy. They include; Kwame Peprah, a former Finance Minister. The Late Victor Selormey, a former Deputy Finance Minister and Dan Abodakpi, MP for Keta and Trade and Industry Minister, Ibrahim Adams, Food and Agriculture Minister and Dr. George Sipa Yankey, an Investment Policy Adviser at the Finance Ministry. The former Chief Executive of Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), Tsatsu Tsikata, has recently been jailed under the same law.In a statement the GNP, said because the President granted others pardon in the past, those actions could make Mr. Tsatsu Tsikata believe that he would also be granted pardon.Speaking to Joy News, Eric Mensah Sarpong GNP Deputy General Secretary, argued that there are other prisoners convicted and sentenced under other laws and only a few of them have received presidential pardon. He was therefore concerned that it has happened so often that politicians who have been jailed under this law are the only ones who are receiving presidential pardon. He wondered if the President would grant Mr. Tsikata too pardon, saying if he doesn’t he would have been deemed not to have shown fairness in his case?By Emmanuel K.
