A delegation led by the current board chair, Prof. William Asumaning and the Managing Director, Mr. Patrick A.K. Akorli, the company’s citation expressed great appreciation to the steering efforts made by Hon. Kweku Baah that resisted the outright sale of GOIL in 1997.
“This citation is presented to you in appreciation of certain key accomplishments and decisions taken by the Board during your tenure as the Chairman. Notable among these were, the Board under your leadership, resisted the outright sale of GOIL at a time the company was struggling financially”, Prof. Asumaning said.
“You, from your exalted position saw the potential inherent in GOIL, and stood strongly by your convictions in resisting the intended disposal. Today, your position has been vindicated, with GOIL widely accepted as the OMC of choice for many Ghanaians”, the citation added.
The message concluded that, “principally for the above reasons, but most importantly for a job well done, GOIL is desirous of placing it on record, its appreciation for the role you have played in helping to build the company over the years”.
Hon. Kweku Baah was very appreciative by the gesture from GOIL and recounted his appointment as Board Chairman in 1997, at the time that the company was on its way to be disposed.
“I am really touched by your gesture. I never knew somebody at GOIL was keeping the records and has remembered how we toiled in 1997 to resist the sale of GOIL; and today GOIL is widely accepted as the number 1 OMC in Ghana”, Hon. Kweku Baah said.
The 80-year old former Board Chairman of GOIL presented an autographed copy of his strategic plan that helped him to halt the sale of the company in 1997 to the GOIL delegation. Hon. Kweku Baah was appointed the Board Chairman of GOIL in the year 1997 and served in that capacity till 2001.
