Government has banned trucks loaded with onions, from off-loading goods at the Agbogbloshie Market in Accra, with immediate effect.
The Greater Accra Region Minister, Henry Quartey, who gave the directive on Monday, explained that it is part of measures to ensure that traders comply with the July 1, relocation deadline.
Onion sellers and cattle rearers are to move to Adjen Kotoku, which is at least one hour drive from their current location, in a bid to decongest the Agbogbloshie market.
However, the traders are bent on defying the directive, insisting the space at Adjen Kotoku, is too small to accommodate their huge numbers.
“We are not going. Nobody is going. The place is too small for us. We are five groups, and one group has more than 1000 people,” one of the traders told JoyNews’ Maame Esi Thompson.
But Minister Quartey has stated that their concerns have come a bit too late, stressing that all the aforementioned traders are to evacuate the Agbogbloshie Market before Thursday, July 1.
“The ‘Make Accra work’ is for all of us, it is not for Henry Quartey. Today, the rains have set in, God knows what will happen but we pray we do not experience the June 3 disaster again.
“We are doing this in the interest of Accra and Mother Ghana. Accra is Ghana and Ghana is Accra, let us rise and build for God and country. No concerns, we have gone past that one please,” he stated.
