The government has signed a new contract with Messrs Contracta Construction UK Ltd to the value of €138.5m to execute, complete and equip the 750-bed Maternity and Children’s block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH).
The Health Ministry’s post on facebook announcing the deal said: “This is part of the Government's commitment to improving healthcare delivery nationwide... to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) with impact on Maternal and Child Care status.”
The Minister for Health, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu signed for the government while Mr Fabio H. Camara initialled for Messrs Contracta Construction.
The KATH maternity ward project was started in 1974 by the Kutu Acheampong regime but the project has been abandoned by successive governments, resulting in deaths of pregnant women and babies at the facility.
It was a Joy News documentary, ‘Next to Die’ which first brought the heart-rending situation to public light, prompting the Rebecca Akufo-Addo Foundation and The Multimedia Group, to start a campaign which led to the construction of a new Mother and Baby Unit for the hospital.
