The Government is to assist traditional areas with the needed support to enable them increase the production of agricultural produce in which they have comparative advantage.
This is intended to make the traditional areas concentrate more on those products to increase their yield.
Minister of Chieftaincy and Culture, Alexander Asum-Ahinsan disclosed this at a durbar of the Chiefs and people of Avatime Traditional when he delivered an address on behalf President John Evans Atta Mills at Vane to climax the annual “Amu Festival 2010”.
The annual rice festival is to emphasise the need for the people to improve their yield, as it is the staple food for the people of Avatime Traditional Area.
Asum-Ahinsan said the support forms part of government’s efforts to pay serious attention to the agriculture sector in order to improve the food security situation of the country as well as reduce rural poverty.
He appealed to chiefs to release lands on favourable terms to enable the project take off successfully.
He urged unemployed youths to go back to their villages and take advantage of the Youth in Agriculture Programme to improve their lot instead of roaming the streets of cities.
He said the government will not relent in its efforts to achieve the better Ghana agenda.
To this end, universities and research institutions have been challenged to come out with improved methods of agricultural production to suit current trends.
