Government will this year invest estimated funds of ¢1.5 billion in water expansion projects, the Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Ing. Dr Clifford Braimah has said.
The move is to improve the distribution of water across the country.
Speaking to Host of Prime Morning Show, Daniel Dadzie, GWCL boss revealed the projects will be funded from the 2020 budget.
“I don’t think the Covid-19 pandemic will affect the investment in the water projects. These are dedicated funds for the project and if you talk of Covid-19 water is also critical,” he said.
Construction of some projects scheduled to have commenced in the first quarter of 2020 had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus and the subsequent imposition of restrictions.
But Dr Braimah indicated works will resume immediately the restrictions on the country are eased.
There have been reports of water shortage in some parts of the country such as Tema, Nungua and Dansoman etc; making it difficult for residents of these communities to observe World Health Organisation (WHO) safety protocols of regular hand washing in the wake of Covid-19.
But Dr. Braimah said the emergency maintenance carried out in the Tema enclave has been completed and that water supply to the affected homes restored.
GWCL Boss bemoaned the illegal connection some individuals continue to engage in; a phenomenon he said is affecting the revenue of the company.
Dr. Braimah also appealed to Ghanaians to store enough water since supplies from his outfit cannot meet consumers demand.
