Government in collaboration with the Japanese government is to set up solar testing and training centres for the implementation of Ghana’s solar energy Master Plan.
Two training centres would be established at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and the Tamale Polytechnic where Japanese solar energy experts would train Ghanaian technicians in solar system Photo Voltaic (PV) installation and maintenance.
The testing centres would also be established where all solar equipment and materials imported into the country would be tested and certified.
This came to light at the launch of a Joint Coordinating Committee for Human Resource Development towards the dissemination of solar Photo Voltaic (PV) system in Ghana.
The team would implement government’s programme of action for the establishment of the two solar testing and training centres being spearheaded by the Ministry of Energy in collaboration with Ministry of Education.
The Japanese government is sponsoring the project with a grant through its International Cooperation Assistance (JICA).
Joseph Adda, Energy Minister, said Ghana was endowed with solar energy resources but only a few sectors had benefited marginally.
“In 2003, government came out with a Master Plan to promote the development of solar for off-grid rural electrification using renewable energy in the northern part of the country.”
Solar PV, according to Mr Adda, could be sustainable if properly planned and the adequate human resource for its management and operation was developed.
The implementation of the project scheduled for between 2007 and 2010 is expected to substantially address the country’s future energy challenges.
Key institutions involved in this project are the Ghana Standards Board, the Association of Ghana Solar Industries, KNUST and Tamale Polytechnic.
