The Mayor of Kumasi says President Mahama will not be distracted from his focus to see through the government’s development plans for Ashanti Region.

Kojo Bonsu observed the President’s vision for the region has sometimes been tainted and misconstrued to cast a snare in the eyes of the public, including protests and agitations.

The Mayor however says projects of the Mahama administration are uplifting the image of the regional capital, Kumasi.

Speaking at a media soiree in Kumasi, Mayor Bonsu noted that though Ashanti Region is not the stronghold of the ruling party, the President has ensured unrivaled development.

“When a section of the public in Kumasi started protesting the redevelopment of the Kejetia-Central markets, the President who is not from this region could have moved the project to other regions but continuously he said, I have promised the people of Kumasi and he has ensured the project continues,” Kojo Bonsu told the press.

According to him, the opposition party and some media personnel have the tendency to tag every development project with corruption without any evidence, in their bid to derail the efforts and vision to develop Kumasi.

“The President has never turned down any development request coming from Ashanti Region,” he noted. “Maybe my style as Mayor is not pleasing to some people but I can promise you in the near future people will understand that the Mayor knew what he was doing…but as Mayor, I will stay focused and use the criticism to achieve a lot for this city.”

The KMA Boss announced the asphalting of 74 kilometres of Kumasi roads among other facelit projects in the city next year.

“The Post Office area, and the European Market area, occupied haphazardly by people will be redeveloped to befit the status of Kumasi. Prempeh Assembly hall will be modernized. We will be constructing an ultra modern city hall complex which will house a 2500 seater theatre.”

Kojo Bonsu also enumerated a number of developmental projects pursued by the KMA in the area of education, health, water and sanitation.
