Ranking member on Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee says government has shown very little interest in the welfare of the victims of flooding in the Upper East region.
According to James Agalga, the aid from government came in a little too late.
His comments come after the Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia toured the region which was affected by floods and made some donations to victims of the flooding.
“It is time they took the people of the Upper East region very seriously,” he said.
Several people were killed and others were left injured following heavy rains in the region in the past weeks.
National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Ghana Red Cross society and some government officials have toured the region with relief items for the victims.
“I heard the Vice President announced that some relief is on the way valued at ¢50,000. It is woefully inadequate for a whole region,” Mr Agalga lamented.
Many of the victims whose homes were destroyed by the rains were housed in shelters across the region.
However, some of the victims have bemoaned their living conditions at some of these shelters.
Meanwhile, the Upper East regional director of NADMO, Jerry Asamane has stated that government is working tirelessly to resettle the victims of the disaster.
