The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the establishment of the Ghana Defence University, outlining concrete steps to advance the project.
Speaking during a site inspection of the proposed location, he disclosed that the government, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund, is finalising arrangements to secure sustainable funding and provide the infrastructure required for the take-off of the institution.
He revealed that GH¢25 million has been earmarked as seed funding under the 2026 GETFund formula to support the initial phase.
The Minister also indicated that efforts are underway to provide a legal framework for the university, noting that he is engaging the Office of the Attorney-General to finalise a draft bill for submission to Parliament.
Highlighting the importance of the initiative, Mr. Iddrisu described the Ghana Armed Forces as a model of discipline and professionalism, stressing the need to build a world-class institution to support its training and development.

He further proposed expanding the university’s academic scope to include emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, to align military training with evolving global security trends.
The Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi, who joined the inspection, commended the Education Minister for his leadership in pushing the project forward.
Also addressing the gathering, the Chief of Defence Staff, William Agyapong, said the university would serve not only the military but also other security agencies, including the Police and Prisons Services, as well as institutions across the sub-region.
When completed, the Ghana Defence University is expected to serve as a centre of excellence in military education, research, and strategic training, contributing to national development and strengthening regional security cooperation.
