The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has commenced the nationwide disbursement of funds under the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.
At a press briefing held on Monday, June 30, the sector Minister, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, announced a significant boost in the government’s financial commitment to the initiative, aimed at supporting the country’s most vulnerable populations.
“The government has allocated GH₵953.5 million to the LEAP Programme in the 2025 budget, an increase from the 2024 allocation of GH₵728.8 million,” she revealed.
She also announced that the Cabinet has approved an expansion of the programme’s coverage. As a result, the number of beneficiary households has increased from 350,000 to 400,000 across all regions.
The Minister further disclosed that an inflation-adjusted payment structure has been introduced, starting with the 96th payment cycle. This will see improved cash support for households based on their size.
“Households with one eligible member will receive GH₵320, up from GH₵256. Two-member households will now receive GH₵380, up from GH₵304.
"Three-member households will get GH₵440, up from GH₵352. Households with four or more eligible members will receive GH₵530, up from GH₵424,” she explained.
She urged beneficiaries to channel the funds into activities that improve household well-being.
“LEAP beneficiary households should prioritise household nutrition, children’s education, and investment in income-generating activities. They should equally begin to adopt a savings culture based on clear household consumption needs and goals,” she advised.
She reiterated that LEAP remains a targeted social protection programme for the most vulnerable, including orphans and vulnerable children, elderly persons aged 65 and above without support, persons with severe disabilities who are unable to work, and extremely poor pregnant and lactating women with infants under one year old.
