The Convention People’s Party has highlighted the lack of national ownership in many sectors of the economy as a major setback in the nation’s quest towards economic development.
In an interview with Joy FM, Dr Kweku Osafo, chairman of the Manifesto Committee remarked that the “ownership of natural resources doesn’t mean we should not collaborate with foreign investors and the CPP wants to make that clear. Rather ownership means that the country controls a sizable portion of the key sectors of this economy."
He went on to state, that the lynchpin of the CPP’s economic policies will be to look critically at the nation’s ownership of resources. He cited the oil and gold sectors as major areas that the nation should have greater control over.
“We have no problem with investors coming to prospect for oil but after they recover their investments, Ghana should be able to own 50-70 percent of the equity”.
Focusing on the private sector he emphasized the need for government's support and encouragement for indigenous entrepreneurs so that the nation could compete better in the global market.
