Government has ordered the immediate decommissioning of dumpsites which are no longer in use in the Ga South municipality.
Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, says such lands must be put to good use so communities will gladly accept fresh requests for lands for use as dumpsites.
Parliament’s Select Committee on Environment, Science and Technology blamed city officials and the Environmental Protection Agency for not doing anything to reclaim landfill sites which have been closed down for years now.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo who toured some of the landfill sites on Thursday is not happy at the development.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo told Joy News the redundant landfill sites at Mallam and Oblogo will be decommissioned in a few weeks.
Meanwhile space has been created at Accra’s major dumpsite, the Saba landfill site in Weija to accommodate more waste.
The road leading to the dump site will also be tarred in a few weeks to prevent erosion when it rains.
