Managing Editor of the Gye Nyame Concord, Alfred Ogbamey, says government will be justified on its morality argument on the Jake ‘bungalow’ saga if it had amended the Accra Re-development Policy by a Cabinet decision.He said the land leased to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman, Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey was in line with the Accra Re-development policy hence his [Jake] conduct cannot be perceived as immoral.Alfred Ogbamey baffled at Cabinet’s decision not to sell the state bungalow at No.2 Mungo Street, Ridge in Accra saying the government is engaging in an act of illegality.He made these remarks while contributing to a panel discussion on the controversial Jake bungalow saga on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday.The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)through a Cabinet decision annulled the fifty year lease of a state land to Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey. It came a day after a Supreme Court by a 6-3 majority ruled in favour of the NPP Chairman in case brought against him by two deputy ministers.Government accused Jake of ‘immorality’ in his acquisition of the state property and said its decision to revoke the sale is in the supreme interest of the state.Alfred Ogbamey however retorted: “where was morality when duty post accommodation facilities were sold to Members of Parliament (MPS) of the first and second Parliaments under the NDC”.He indicated that the Mills-led administration is equally liable in matters of ‘immorality’ since according to him, many of the state lands and bungalows at prime areas in Accra have been sold to government cronies.Mr. Ogbamey wondered why for three years the NDC has not amended the policy if it claims to be acting in the supreme interest of the people of Ghana.He added that the Cabinet directive that no political appointee should be allowed to purchase State property will not address the issue since they can connive with other people or use different names to acquire state property.He observed that government’s decision to annul the lease will be an exercise in futility since he says the land paid for by Jake is no more the property of the State.To nip this ‘bad’ policy in the bud, Mr. Ogbamey called for the scraping of the Accra Redevelopment policy - a scheme he says has deprived ordinary Ghanaians the right to acquire state assets.He noted that Ghanaians will applaud the Mills-led government if it amends the policy which benefits a few people especially in government.Alfred Ogbamey also urged government to seek a review if it disagrees with the Supreme Court rather than the use of communist inferior tactics it has adopted.On the contrary, the NDC MP for Ablekuma Central, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, a co-panelist on the programme, said he expected Mr. Obetsebi-Lamptey to voluntary relinquish his claim to the property and ask for a refund of his money in the interest of the state.He hinted that government will soon take measures to protect state assets and prevent public officials from ‘looting’ public property.Hon. Tetteh Chaie feared the repercussion the trend might have on Ghana if just a few privileged people have access to the national cake at the expense of the citizenry.“When the people feel cheated for a long time it leads to civil war,” he bemoaned.
