The Government will not prosecute the Ashanti Regional Minister, Kofi Poku Manu for his incitable comments at an NDC rally over the week-end.The Opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding the immediate resignation and prosecution of the regional minister for imploring party supporters to “slap” opponents who taunt them and who seek the downfall of the party.Even though the minister has subsequently expressed remorse and apologised for his comments, head of communications for the NPP, Kweku Kwarteng insists that is not enough.Kwarteng in a press statement described as “criminal dangerous and morally reprehensible,” the utterances by Kofi Manu, adding his apology does not in any way obliterate the effects his comments may have on his supporters. But in an interview with Joy News the Attorney General, Betty Mould Iddrissu said the utterances are unfortunate and regrettable but does not warrant call for his prosecution. She argued the call for his prosecution is premature, more so when there has not been any breach of peace, or assault attributable to his comments. She described Kofi Manu as a usually “mild mannered gentleman,” who was carried away by the heat of the political situation to make the comments.“I don’t think this is a case to be pursued in court” she said, imploring all politicians to be moderate in their utterances. The Ashanti regional secretary of NDC said the call for the prosecution of his boss by the NPP is hypocritical. He argued Maxwell Kofi Jumah while he served as the deputy Local Government Minister and Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin North made similar remarks but the party failed to take any punitive measures.Story by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
