The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that took place at the Sogakope Customs checkpoint on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.
The incident occurred during an operation by Customs Division officers to intercept a suspected uncustomed Mercedes-Benz E350 sedan being smuggled from Togo into Ghana.
According to GRA in a statement, officers at the checkpoint received intelligence about the illegal entry of the vehicle and attempted to apprehend its occupants.
However, the suspects abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot.
In response, the officers fired warning shots to deter their escape. Unfortunately, a bystander a few meters from the checkpoint was struck by a stray bullet.
The injured individual was immediately transported to the Sogakope Comboni Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention and responding to treatment.
The GRA has assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Additionally, the authority has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders while fulfilling its duty of protecting national revenue.
"We sympathize with persons affected by the unfortunate incident which occurred in the course of protection of revenue at the country’s borders and remain committed to our mission of ensuring the safety and security of all stakeholders,” the GRA stated.
