If last year’s performance of the Gracias Choir at the Easter Cantata could be described as the “best”, then there would not be any superlative left to describe Wednesday’s edition of the concert at the Accra International Conference Center.The mood at Wednesday’s Gracias Choir Easter Cantata was rather a solemn one due to the shocking and unfortunate death of the first gentleman of the land, John Evans Mills. The show itself which was dedicated to the memory of late President saw the orchestra wearing an all black outfit.On the night, the Gracias Choir showed just why they have become so popular and esteemed among Ghanaians. The show started with an opera rendition of some of the classical Twi songs by the choir which is predominantly made up of South Korean as well as nationals from the USA, Mexico among other countries.The choir re-enacted the crucifixion of Jesus Christ which was beautifully woven into soothing melodious tunes from the backing orchestra.The reenactment detailed Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples, when he was betrayed by Judas, his trial by Pontius Pilate and the crowning moment when he was nailed to the cross. Through out these scenes, the special effects such as the lighting and sound were top notched leaving the patrons at the AICC amazed.The costumes for the reenactment were equally spot on as it reflected the roman times when the incident really took place.The well-rehearsed reenactment of the crucifixion of Christ left most patrons at the conference center teary as the mood in the packed auditorium was already somber. Some patrons of the concert could not hold back their tears.When the final nail was driven into the feet of Jesus, and the cross was erected, there was a loud silence in the packed hall. His last words were “it is finished” but the concert was far from over.As the body of Jesus was deposited at the tomb, the earth quake that followed on the third and his subsequent resurrection was what really drew a standing ovation from the audience.
