The Graphic Communication Group Needy Fund, in partnership with Toyota Ghana Limited, has issued out Mutual Health Insurance Scheme identification cards to some 400 persons in the Osu Klotey Sub Metro in the Greater Accra region.
This follows an earlier registration of the recipients in October 2011 when the registration exercise first started.
Speaking at a brief ceremony to distribute the cards to the beneficiaries, the Managing Director of the Graphic Communication Group, Ken Ashigbey said the purpose of the exercise was to help reduce the financial burden of the less privileged in the society.
He added the Group intends to take the exercise nationwide, so other less privileged persons in other parts of the country can also benefit.
When the team went to distribute the cards, some residents in the sub metro also took advantage to register to join the mutual health scheme.
Even though the first round of registration last October was at no cost to the beneficiaries, those who decided to register during the visit were made to pay a subsidized rate for their registration.
A minimum of GH¢4 was charged for persons who were already contributors to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) whiles the non-SSNIT contributors were required to pay GH¢ 15.
According to the sub metro’s scheme manager, Borketey Bortey, the rush by other persons with the sub metro to register to join the scheme is an indication that the people had faith in the scheme.
Mr. Ashigbey also urged the government to put children with cancer on the scheme, since they are not covered under the current scheme.
