A group calling itself the Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana has opposed the appointment of Nana Oye Lithur to the position of Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection.
According to the group, the appointment of Nana Oye Lithur, a “proponent and supporter of gay rights,” could be detrimental to the interests of Ghana, particularly at a time foreign aid to African nations is closely linked to the receiving country’s official stance on homosexuality.
Nana Oye Lithur was included in the first batch of ministerial nominees whose names were made public last week. She is known to have defended the rights of suspected gays and lesbians who were attacked by unidentified persons because of their sexual orientation.
The group also took issue with the newly appointed Executive Secretary to the President, Dr. Raymond Atuguba, for his liberal views on the issue of homosexuality.
According to group spokesman Bishop Prince Benny Wood, Dr. Atuguba, who was the chairman of the Constitutional Review Commission, failed to make any recommendations to the President on the subject of homosexuality despite the fact that 98% of the submissions that the Commission received regarding homosexuality opposed it.
