A group calling itself Humanists Watch is protesting the upcoming visit by the United States President, George W. Bush to Ghana and other African countries. The White House last week issued a statement saying President Bush will visit Ghana and other countries on the Continent. The visit which follows the last one in 2003 is expected to be used by Mr Bush to boost efforts at increasing economic development, the fight against HIV/AIDS, and reduce the incidence of malaria and other diseases. But the group says it is against the visit because Mr Bush is not genuinely seeking to protect human rights in Africa citing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.Speaking to Joy News’ Akwasi Sarpong, a representative of the group, Paddy Williams said the circumstances under which prisoners were kept at the Guantanamo Bay in Cuba clearly demonstrated Mr Bush’s lack of respect for human rights.Responding to questions as to how the fight against terrorism by the Bush administration was affecting the president’s resolve to help Africa tackle debilitating diseases, Mr Williams said a fraction of the amount of money spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be used to deal with all such diseases on the continent.
