Former Works and Housing Minister, Hackman Owusu-Agyeman is urging the Mills administration to tread cautiously in its desire to reclaim lands formerly held by the state but now in private hands.
The current administration has indicated that ownership of the affected lands will have to revert to the state because of irregularities regarding their acquisition.
But speaking on Joy FM’s news analysis pogramme, Newsfile on Saturday, Mr. Owusu-Agyeman said the government must be mindful of the law in any such attempt.
“What we sought to do was to rationalize the use of land… and the Phase One put in place by the [previous] NDC government, when I was minister I thought made a lot of sense and so we needed to pursue it further,” he said.
The lands in question are mostly located in prime areas in Accra including the Airport residential area and Cantonments.
But Mr. Owusu-Agyeman said the land re-allocation programme was not supposed to have been limited to Accra.
He argued that it was therefore inaccurate to suggest that lands belonging to the Ga people were targeted for appropriation.
In his view, whatever difficulties that have arisen as a result of the reallocation should be administratively addressed to enable the country make progress.
