There was a mixed feeling of amusement and amazement on Wednesday at the East Legon residence of one of the frontrunners in the New Patriotic Party’s flag bearer slot, Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, when a group of dyed in the wool NDC supporters marched in their numbers to pledge support for his government if he should win the race.
According to the Independent, the group, made up of youth from the Volta Region, confessed that, they were highly impressed by the former Minister’s message to his party members on his last tour to the region and were therefore convinced that, he was the best person to lead the NPP in the 2008 general elections.
Many of the NDC members were clad in NDC party ‘T’ shirts on their arrival at the residence of the NPP presidential aspirant amidst drumming and dancing.
According to the NDC members, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang is a more competent man than the NDC flagbearer, Professor John Evans Atta-Mills.
The group’s representative, John Mensah told The Independent that, he had about 400 more people who were all willing to join the party because of Mr. Owusu-Agyemang.
He said, his members have seen the profile and handouts containing Mr. Owusu-Agyemang’s achievements and are therefore convinced that, he is the best aspirant to lead the NPP and the entire country.
Mr. Mensah, who is from Ho Central while other colleagues hail from surrounding towns and constituencies, said, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang has all it takes to lead the party and as such he is a personality worth following.
“We voted for Atta Mills but he could not fly and we have no doubt in our minds that, he (Hackman) can turn around the economic fortunes of our country,” he pointed out.
According to him, what is more fascinating about him is the ‘kaya kaya’ story some newspapers carried about him.
The NDC members had enough fanfare and made merry in the house of Mr. Owusu-Agyemang and according to them, they were not bothered about the repercussions of their actions since they want the best for Ghana.
Some of the members who were present at Mr. Owusu-Agyemang's residence were Christian Senyasu, David Tsagli, Saviour Mawunyo, David Mensah, Seth Nueh, Kafui Delali, Tom Agrokpah and Cephas Adom.
The rest are Hope Selorm, Kofi Yeboah, Ama Atsiga and Dave Mavis Gakpo
According to the paper, the NDC members are therefore advising people to look beyond party politics and support the right person.
Mr. Hackman Owusu-Agyemang and his campaign team and family members were so happy about the support by the group and urged them to advise people to make the right choice on December 22.
Meanwhile, The Independent says there are signs many delegates to the New Patriotic Party's December 22 Congress are swaying the way of Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, affectionately called "Action Man,"
“Our investigations show that, the delegates who are undoubtedly the real soldiers of the party are rooting for the Action Man, simply because of his outstanding and exceptional contributions towards the sustenance of the party.
They are of the view that, but for Hackman Owusu-Agyemang the troubles of the party would have deepened particularly whilst in opposition and indicated that, his party track record is unparalleled.
Additionally the delegates who spoke to The Independent on condition of anonymity pointed out that, the flag bearer slot of the party is not for any Johnny just come but is for someone who is well-ingrained in the party's philosophy and ideologies and can pursue policies and programmes that fit into the party’s philosophy.
