The contractors executing the Korle Bridge project on the beach road at James Town in Accra have been urged to hasten work to ease vehicular traffic and congestion in the area especially during the rush hours. The call was made by Mr Joseph Nii Otu Otoo, an Executive of the Odododiodoo constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Accra on Monday. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) he stated that the project had been abandoned for the past five months creating a lot of inconvenience to motorists and people who plied the route especially in the mornings and evenings to and from the central business centre of the city in the south western corridor of the capital. Mr Otoo said that at the sod cutting for the Project by President John Agyekum Kufuor, the Chinese contractors promised to complete work by August this year. He stated that "August is just around the corner" while the project had come to a standstill with people spending almost double the amount they had to pay for transport to and from work. "It is a pity to see people struggling for transport in the mornings and evenings after alighting from vehicles and being ferried to the other side of the lagoon to their various destination," Mr Otoo said. He expressed concern about the effect the situation was going to have on productivity since workers had to spend hours to get transport to work especially in the mornings. Alternatively, people had to use other routes to and from the business district contributing to heavy vehicular traffic on the other roads in the city. Mr Otoo expressed the hope that this project was not one of those where after elaborate sod cutting they are abandoned only to be tackled when it was getting close to the elections, which was barely 14 months away to gain what he called "cheap political advantage".Source: GNA
