Hawkers who are being driven off the streets are said to be gradually returning onto the streets and pavements of the capital.Joy News reporter David Youngs visited some streets in the capital and reported the authorities are struggling to deal with the situation. At the Tudu, CMB, the Rawlings Circle, and the Tema Station areas – all in the central business district of Accra – police, fire and prison officers as well as AMA city guards are still struggling to check the hawkers off the streets.Although these hawkers were driven away by the AMA they have found a new way to ply their trade. Some carry samples of their wares in trays around and whisper the praises of these goods to passers-by who might eventually follow the trader to a hideout where the bulk of the items being sold is kept.Security forces patrolling the streets however say the exercise is on course. The AMA’s decongestion exercise comes after the assembly ordered hawkers to leave the streets or face sanction. But some of the traders complain they should have been given some more time to pack off.“We have no alternative; the AMA should have allowed us some more time,” a hawker told Youngs as she held a pan of toffees in hand. The AMA has however hinted that the exercise would continue because the activities of these traders contribute a lot to filth in the city.Critics however say the decongestion exercise is a nine-day wonder and would not be sustained after visiting US President Barack Obama has left the country.Mr Obama is due to pay a two-day visit to Ghana and would spend the 10th and 11th of July in the country.Source: Myjoyonline.com
