A health expert is pessimistic about the success of government’s war on maternal and child mortality. The Ghana Health Service has declared 2011 the year of action to meet Millennium Development Goals four and five.Currently about 380 women die out of a hundred thousand deliveries in sharp contrast to the UN target of 185.Reproductive Health Specialist at the UNFPA Dr. Robert Kwesi Mensah told Joy News very little can be achieved since government does not intend to increase funding for the campaign. He said proper family planning can reduce maternal mortality by about 30 per cent, adding however that because family planning is expensive, government’s tend to shy away from making funds available for it.“I must say that if you direct all the resources of the Ghana Health Service to resolving maternal health issues, it won’t be adequate,” Dr Mensah said.Source: Joy News/Ghana
