Hundreds of passengers were stranded for hours along the Suhum section of the Accra-Kumasi highway after a downpour last night leaving the road almost unmotorable.
Reports say the Suhum-Amenase section of the highway which is still under construction, has become muddy and slippery, making it difficult for vehicles to cross.
Passengers made desperate attempts to reach the police throughout the night to manage the chaos that ensued.
Drivers who could afford detoured through Koforidua to Kumasi but as many as 500 vehicles waited until 9am Saturday before they managed to cross the road.
One of the frustrated passengers, Carl Williams who spoke to Joy News, said some daring drivers asked their passengers to alight and managed to meander through the slippery road.
The Suhum District Police Commander, DSP Anane-Appiah and his men who managed to bring the chaos there under control told Joy News the contractor working on the project was also called in to assist by ploughing off a section of mud.
“A stretch between Suhum and Abenase up to Teacher Mantey, the road was slippery and the police was there to direct traffic.
“At one point we had to call in the contractor to plough off the mud and pull vehicles which were stuck.”
The National Vice Chairman of the GPRTU, Alhaji Essah Tetteh alleged the contractor on the project ignored several appeals from them to fix it before the rains set in.
“You see, when this happens, some of our drivers try to make time lost and tend to over speed. And that could result in fatal accidents,” he lamented.
