There was a heavy security presence in the Hohoe township in the Volta Region on Tuesday as residents mark exactly a year since clashes erupted between indigenes and members of the Zongo community there.
Three people died in the clashes and several properties were destroyed.
Although calm has returned to the area since, the town is yet to fully recover from the effects of last year’s violence.
Readers will recall that the violence begun after the indigenes exhumed the body of the Chief Imam there prompting the Muslim settlers to vandalize the chief’s palace.
Lorlonyo FM’s Isaac Mintah told Joy News that most shops in the area did not open today. The town is relatively calm, people are reflecting in a somberly manner, he said.
Explaining the heavy police presence in the area, he said there were rumours that some people were planning to cause mayhem during the anniversary, the police, therefore, decided to beef up security so that they would not be taken by event.
Mintah said Muslims in the Zongo community went to the mosque to pray for a lasting peace. Most people in the community have been indoors since morning, he observed.
Traditional leaders in the area, he said, saw the clashes as a taboo and have been indoor pouring libation to pacify the gods in order to forestall a repeat.
The police are expected to monitor situation there for about three days before leaving, he learnt.
Meanwhile, Volta Regional Minister Afotey Agbo has told Joy News he has read the report of the Committee set up to investigate the clashes but said its implementation has been delayed due to a number of processes they had to go through: He mentioned the death of the former regional minister and reshuffle of the regional ministers.
But the issue has been explained to the paramount chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, Togbega Gabusu, he said.
Arrangement has also been made with a contractor to start working on the palace of the paramount chief, but the cost and plan of the palace should be decided before the contractor would be allowed to move to site.
