The Ghana Highway Authority says it would not compromise on the enforcement of the law axle load weighing system. The authority started enforcing the system on June 1 in conformity with ECOWAS regulations. The plan is to ensure that truck drivers do not overload their vehicles. Haulage truck drivers who transport cargo to the hinterlands and landlocked countries are fuming over what they call insufficient education on the axle load weighing system. Over 850 trucks were last Saturday detained at the Tema Port for exceeding the permissible tonnage introduced by the Ghana Highway Authority. They were released after the Ghana Shippers Council intervened to negotiate the payment penalties. A number of trucks are still detained at the Axle Load Bridge near the Tema Motorway. The Axle Load Manager Ofori Frimpong said the high spate of accidents on our roads Chief Executive of the Shippers Council, a major stakeholder, Kofi Mbiah, says more vigorous education is required to address some bottlenecks.
