The Electoral Commission of Ghana has indicated one of the things potential voters will be required to provide during the upcoming biometric registration is their residential address in their hometown.
Persons who have moved from their hometowns to live in other places are especially the ones who would be required to provide that information.
Head of Public Affairs of the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry who made the announcement said before one can be registered, they would need to provide their name, age, date of birth, current residential address, parents' (biological) residential address (hometown) among others.
Mr. Owusu Parry said it should not be difficult for one to produce his/her residential address back home because one could call a relative and be provided with the information.
He also cautioned voters to ensure that they register at the polling station they will want to vote at on December 7, since it will be very difficult to transfer one’s name with the biometric system.
He disclosed further that due to insufficient registration kits every registration centre will be a cluster comprising of four polling stations with the registration lasting for 10 days at every centre.
Touching on who qualified to register, Mr. Owusu Parry said anybody of sound mind who is 18 or above can register and added that if one is not able to answer the questions correctly, it will be difficult to allow such a person since it may have implications.
“For instance, if somebody is of sound mind, he should be able to mention his name, age, date of birth, parents’ name among other things,” he stated.
He also stressed the need for all to be vigilant during the forty-day registration exercise since the computer cannot detect minors by fingerprint when they lie about their age.
