The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian church of Ghana (PCG), the Rt. Rev. Professor Emmanuel Martey, has stated the church's position on homosexuality, condemning the practice as
"unbiblical, un-African, abnormal and filthy".
He said the PCG condemned homosexuality and bisexuality (in which a person is married to the opposite sex and yet engaged in homosexual relations with others), stressing that those acts must not be tolerated in the country.
According to the Moderator, the PCG would soon come up with a statement on homosexuality ; and same-sex marriages, adding that during the church's General Assembly in August this year, one of the major decisions it would take would be whether or not to continue partnership relations with churches which had decided to ordain homosexuals in any part of the world.
The Rt Rev. Prof. Martey expressed these sentiments when he preached the sermon at the ordination of 31 ministers of the PCG at the Ascension Congregation in Koforidua on Sunday.
The ministers, including three women, who have successfully served their ministerial probation in various parts of the country in the past two years, were ordained by the moderator, assisted by the Clerk of the General Assembly, Rev. Herbert Anim Opong, and the General Assembly Council.
The Moderator said although the world had achieved sophisticated technological innovations, "the world is still terribly confused" and even churches in many countries were terribly confused and did not know what was good and what was evil.
According to him, the righteousness of most churches had become "filthy rags and preachers with diapers are now mounting the pulpits".
He' said churches in Europe and America did not know whether homosexuality was sinful or not and ended up ordaining homosexual pastors and blessing same-sex marriages.
He reminded the ministers that they were going into the ministry at a time when there was dire need for divine intervention and direction and the need for a prophetic voice coming from God through genuine and true servants of His who had power over all things and controls all things.
He said they should preach and teach the divine mystery of the One God who had performed different functions in His dealings with this world and revealed Himself in three-fold form, referred to as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
He asked the ordained ministers to preach and carefully teach the divine mystery of the Trinitarian God to the world and charged them to preach and reflect the Gospel of Jesus Christ and increase church growth and teach the unadulterated Word of God to bring transformation in lives.
Rev. Samuel Anang Ofoli, who spoke on behalf of the ordained ministers, said they were ready to stay true to their vows and avail themselves for God’s work through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in “shepherding God’s flock.”
