Congestion of hostels at the Tuna Senior High/Technical School in the Northern region has reached alarming levels. Students share mattresses and sleep in very close proximity to each other. Reports say some students sleep in turns at the hostel.Students claim a room that has 21 beds is currently accommodating about 50 students, and a 10-bed room is also housing 40 students. The rooms are so packed that students have put their bags and ‘chop boxes’ on the floor of the veranda.Students fear there could be an outbreak of communicable diseases at the hostel.Many of the students are at the mercy of the rains as most of them sleep outside. The situation, according to the them is affecting their studies.The students also said they are exposed to snakes and other reptiles during the nights.At the inauguration of a GH¢99,000.00 boys dormitory, provided by the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District Assembly, students who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) called on government to come to their aid.Mrs Habiba Abosore, Headmistress of the School, explained that even though the school was yet to be upgraded to a boarding status, about 60 per cent of the students who came from different districts and regions could not afford their own accommodation.She said the overcrowding in the hostels compelled the school authorities to convert some of its classrooms into hostels to mitigate the situation.Mrs Abosore appealed to government to consider upgrading the school into a boarding school system. She also called on benevolent organisations to come to the aid of the school by providing it with classrooms and hostels.Mrs Abosore also entreated authorities of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) to prevail on the contractor working on a one-storey project for the school to complete on time.She commended the Assembly for the GH¢99,000.00 boys dormitory and assured them that the school would do well to maintain it.Master Abubakari Osman, senior prefect of the school, advised students to shun hooliganism and maintain discipline at all times.
