The Minister of Works and Housing has requested additional funding to support the first phase of the Akosombo Dam spillage resettlement programme. 

In response to the dam spillage, the government initially allocated GH¢200 million to the Ministry for the resettlement of affected residents.

During a stakeholder engagement on the dam spillage, Rev. Stephen Yaw Osei, the Chief Director of the Ministry, emphasised the need for an additional GH¢200 million. 

These funds would cover consultancy fees and land compensation, which are crucial components of the ongoing resettlement efforts.

Rev. Osei outlined that the total estimated cost of the project stands at, GH¢600 million. 

He noted that to complete the resettlement process within a year, the Ministry would require the entire amount. 

He also underscored that the Ministry is committed to prioritizing the homes affected by the spillage and is actively seeking the required funds to expedite the resettlement process.

“We projected about 600 million cedis to do the project, but currently we have 200 million cedis. So if you have to do it in a year, it means that we need 600 million to be released for the resettlement process.”

“If it’s going to be two years, that means that we need an additional 200 to make it four so that we can fast-track it and do it in two years. If it is to be three years more, then we need 200 million every year. So we are asking for additional funds if we have to do it in a year. We have the numbers and the prioritised homes to be revealed.”
