A deputy Finance Minister, Fifi Kwetey insists the opposition New Patriotic Party has no moral right to ask for a comeback after a poor show in their eight-year rule.
Except for cocaine which he said gained prominence under their tenure, the deputy minister said the NPP failed in the key sectors of the country’s development.
He was addressing supporters of the NDC over the weekend at a rally to outdoor the Greater Accra Region parliamentary candidates at Mantse Agbonaa, James Town, Accra.
Brandishing documents and facts to the animated crowd, Mr. Kwetey noted that the NDC asked for a comeback in 2008 because of the solid foundation it had laid, a foundation visible for all to see.
According to him, in the education sector the NDC has built 6,321 pre-schools, 12,335 Primary schools, 6,414 JSS, 264 SSS, 110, Science Resource Centre, 3 Public Universities and seven Polytechnics.
On the other hand, the NPP he said only managed 2,362 Preschools, 1,013 Primary Schools, 853 JSS, 19 SSS, 0 Science Resource Centre, 0 Public Universities, 0 Polytechnics.
Such a record by the NPP does not deserve a comeback, he said, wondering “how dare NPP ask for a comeback?”
In the health sector, the NDC built regional hospitals in the Volta, Central and Brong Ahafo regions, refurbished the Effia Nkwanta hospital and did massive rehabilitation of 37 Military and Okomfo Anokye and was about to start the Tamale Hospital.
"What did NPP do about regional hospitals? Zero. Even the Tamale one NDC was about to do they abandoned."
“And yet the NPP has the guts to ask for a comeback. Come back for what? How dare they?” he stated.
On the economy, he said “the NDC in eight years grew the economy of Ghana 12 times, an incredible increase of 1,169%. NPP in eight years achieved a paltry 300% and yet they have been singing all over about quadrupling economy when the real champions grew the economy 12 times and are not talking. The same champions who had brought inflation from 124% in 1984 down to a single digit in May '99 before the crisis erupted in the second half of '99 and 2000.”
He said if the NPP is asking for a comeback, the only reason perhaps is to do what they know how to do best. Cocaine. "NPP, NPP, All they know is cocaine here, cocaine there, cocaine everywhere.”
