One of the locomotive engines of the two trains that collided between Huni Valley and Koranteng in the Western Region on May 14, has been declared "damaged beyond repair."The damage is estimated at $2 million.Disclosing this to the Times in an interview, the Managing Director of the Ghana Railways Company (GRC), Rufus Quaye, said the accident which occurred on a bridge, left one of the train’s engines, type 1670, hanging.He said later attempts to prevent it from falling into a river below failed and it slipped into the water.The engine can only be retrieved when the river dries up. He indicated it might not be useful again as it would have been in the water for too long.As to when it would be replaced, Mr Quaye said it would take time as the company’s financial position is "bad".He described the damage as a big loss which has further compounded the company’s problems.Four carriages of the locomotive, bought together with 13 others in the mid-1990s, have been completely destroyed beyond repair.Meanwhile, Mr Quaye told the Times that the chief of Huni Valley has demanded that some rituals be performed to pacify the gods of the river into which the train fell.He said in response, some money has been given to the chief to buy a sheep, alcoholic drinks and other items for the rituals.He disclosed that the bodies of 10 people who died in the accident have been collected by their families for burial.Two patients are still on admission at the Tarkwa hospital while two others have been referred to the Effia-Nkwanta hospital and one to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.Source: The Ghanaian Times
