Railway Development Minister-designate, Peter Amewu has retracted and apologized for a comment he made in the early hours of Thursday, January 7 2021.
During the inauguration of the 8th parliament, the Hohoe Member of Parliament was caught on camera in a rage of anger threatening to kill NDC MPs who were seen hooting at him as he approached their side of the aisle during a chaotic seen in the House.
“Tell them to come and demonstrate in Hohoe, they cannot dare, I will kill all of you,” the former Energy Minister said angrily.
Describing himself as a "peaceful man", Mr Amewu expressed remorse for the act, explaining that his utterances were triggered by provocations from the opposition members of parliament.
According to him, as a first time member of parliament in the House, he was shocked at the hostile welcoming he received.
"I thought, as a new member having won a very difficult seat, I should be cheered up only to be hooted at. That triggered my anger into using such words.
“I want to withdraw those words unconditionally. My constituency is watching me and Mr Chairman I am a peaceful man. The use of the words came out as an overreaction which is my negative aspect.”
Taking his turn during Wednesday’s vetting, Peter Amewu described the incident as “unfortunate” and further stated that the chaotic scene during the inauguration of the 8th parliament is a black day in the history of Ghana’s democracy.
“The 9th of January was a black day in the history of Ghana’s democracy, Mr Chairman I used that words, I regretted it as I stood before this platform, I want to withdraw those words unconditionally.”
He further assured the Appointments Committee of working on his temperament to avoid such comments moving forward.
