The newly-elected General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Frimpong Kodua, says he was confident he was going to win his bid for the NPP General Secretary position three days to the main event.
According to him, research done by his camp prior to the Election Day had projected that he will garner about 3000 votes, thus ensuring his victory against the then-incumbent, John Boadu.
He won with 2,837 votes, with John Boadu trailing behind him with 2,524 votes.
“Even before I entered the stadium, I think three days before, we had done our calculations and to be honest we were expecting to get about 3000 votes on the D-day based on the reports from our coordinators and constituencies. So we had that research done.
“So when I entered the stadium and the euphoria and those things, we were comfortable, we were confident. The projection that we have made was becoming a reality. And what I needed to do was to sustain it.
“So if you could see me then running around trying to get the crowd to be in line with what we were doing, it was all part of the strategy to make sure that we sustain that momentum till they go and vote,” he said on JoyNews’ PM Express.
He noted that had members of Tescon voted, he would have ultimately reached or perhaps surpassed his target of 3000 votes at the end of the elections.
Tescon had failed to vote due to a court injunction filed against their participation in the election process.
Mr. Kodua noted that while it was unfortunate that Tescon could not participate in the election, he has resolve to get to the bottom of the issue behind the injunction and make sure that it never repeats itself.
“We want to assure them that under our tenure things are put in a better perspective so that it doesn’t happen again. So I’ll apologise to them. But for me we were very confident that if Tescon had voted we could have gotten about 70 to 80% of that vote,” he said.
Justin Frimpong Kodua has attributed his victory to his good relations and relatable character with the party’s grassroots.
He’s hoping to use his new position to effectively reach out to more party grassroots to foster party unity ahead of the 2024 elections.
