Two couples have tested the limits of love after getting married to a blind partner each. If we walk by faith and not by sight then we could as well love by faith and not with our eyes.
Dr. Peter Obeng-Asamoah, the Executive Director of Ghana Blind Union has never seen his wife, Love with whom he has 3 kids. He loves to read and surf the internet in his leisure time. He reads an average of 80 books yearly.
“I lost my sight as 18. I have a very supportive family. There isn’t too much of a difference in my day from that of a normal person. Getting children to school is quite hectic. You hope to have a clear path. When you place something on the table, it should always be there”.
On the other hand, Francis Dogbey is married to Elsie, a teacher at the Kaneshie 2 JHS, she teaches Religious and Moral Education. She lost her sight to measles as a child.
But the two couples have ridiculed the popular constraints and excuses many give in choosing a partner and gone ahead to keep a matrimonial home in peace and love even if one cannot keep his sight.
Meet blind Elsie, she was whisked off the Wa School for the blind and ended up teaching. Her real dream was to be a flight attendant or nurse.
But the sum of her life’s impact is lived in the many lives of the perfectly able students she has taught for many years. Kofi Sarpong a former student recounts that “she taught me a special way to prepare fried rice. I still remember it”
The couple appeared on Friday edition of Joy FM's Super Morning Show.
How they met their partners
Love is lovely. Perfectly designed spectacles sit atop her nose. Fair complexion and looking smart. Her husband wore a smock and swirled gently in his seat certainly proud of his choice.
It is frightening what other choice Peter would have made if he could see because Love is a fine specimen of womanhood.
He said after meeting Love, he had to do a lot of prayers after he had made “all the relevant calculation” and “when the iron was hot”, he struck – and boy oh boy – it was gold.
Love told of her family’s reaction when he introduced Peter as her boyfriend.
“I didn’t have any problem when I introduced Peter to my family. They welcomed him and we moved on,”
“It’s a big market and you went to the market and you have found the man you love. I don’t have any problems with that” Love’s father told her.
And the marriage was sealed. They have been married for 14 years.
Francis has many blind friends already before he met Elsie. And so it was pretty welcome news among his friends when he announced that Elsie
Elisie’s kids are still wrapping her mind around why her mother is blind. “Mummy your eyes are wide open what shows that you can’t see,” she occasionally expressed frustration when her mother bumps into something in the kitchen.
“It’s not a crime marrying a blind person because a crime can do anything a sighted person can do”.
A caller want to know how they perform conjugal functions. Peter volunteered an answer. “It is normal” he said. And with three children, it definitely is normal.
Challenges
Alex Williams whose wife was not in the studio was passionate about disabusing minds of those who shudder to think about getting married to a partner who cannot see.

Alex Williams hold a Masters in Disability Studies
“The understanding often is that you are marrying a bed ridden person means subjecting their future to taking care of some person in addition to the rest of her life”
“You don’t cope with them, you don’t tolerate with them. You live with the person,” he said.
Peter told us how he sings into his kid's room every morning to signify 'wake up'.
The couple agreed that it was important to look out for a marriage in which there is peace and love.
"If you don't have that then forget it", Francis said. And who can doubt him?
