Nigerian musician Lojay says he never envisaged his song ‘Monalisa’ will be a global hit.
The song, which is from the collaborative EP ‘LV N ATTN’ by the musician and producer Sarz, was released in June last year, and confidently took centre stage as the Afro-Fusion EP of the summer.
The 5-song EP presents a medley of R&B, electro, and 'amapiano' sounds, built on an afrobeat base, forming a cohesive body or art worth a replay.
With a staggering 13 million viewership on youtube, Lojay in an interview with Joy Entertainment said, “I knew something from my EP was going to be bang, I just wasn’t sure which one exactly. But it’s out now, and Monalisa is kicking it right now”.
During the festive season at the maiden Wildaland Festival, the musician performed to a lively cosmopolitan audience - from Africa and the rest of the world.
Amidst the language barriers of the song ‘Monalisa’, they chanted along.
When asked how that made him feel, Lojay said “It’s the music, everyone’s just connecting with the music. And that’s the most important thing about music, it’s not really about understanding exactly what’s being said, but the feeling it gives you. When you appreciate the feeling, you will at least, learn to pronounce the words”.
