A former Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Frederick Fredua Antoh, has hinted that he may put in a bid to contest for the position he relinquished five years ago.
The former NPP Chairman, whose administration was docked with a lot of controversies, says he has not ruled out an option to stage a comeback for the NPP Chairmanship in his bid to salvage the dwindling fortunes of the party.
Speaking to Angle FM, a Kumasi-based radio station, the firebrand NPP ex-chairman said he would consider the options available and may contest in the party's Regional congress if choice of prospective candidates is not good enough.
"I would not snub the alternative of going for the contest if I realize that the various choices available are not competent enough to advance the fortunes of the party, I am bidding my time and would make my decision known in due course," Mr. Antoh reacted to the question over whether he would contest for the chairmanship position or not.
Mr. Antoh, who occupied the chairmanship position of the NPP from 1996 to 2004, said he was very much concerned about the current state of affairs in the party as far as Ashanti Region, the stronghold of the party was concerned, and indicated there was the need for the party to revive and reinvigorate its supporting base if its wants to win the elections in 2012.
According to him, the fortitude of the party in the region was at all time low stressing that there was the need for the party to elect someone with the true elephant spirit who is very loyal and committed to the party and is not motivated by power but rather the will to serve the party. Mr. Antoh has also welcomed the proposed amendments of the party's constitution to enlarge the Electoral College, saying the policy would help restore sanity and offer level playing field for all candidates who would contest for various positions in the party.
So far various names have come up as possible candidates for the NPP Regional chairmanship position, the prominent ones include the party's constituency chairman for Bantama, Mr. Henry Kwabena Kokofu, the former Ashanti Regional Deputy Minister, Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, ex-Municipal and District Chief Executives for Obuasi and Kwabre East, Mr. Kwadwo Boampong and Alhaji Akwasi Yeboah respectively and the incumbent chairman, Mr. Robert Yaw Amankwah, who is said to be considering a re-election.
Ironically names like Hon. Sampson Kwaku Boafo, the former Regional Minister and four times Member of Parliament for Subin constituency is also doing rounds as possible candidates for the position.
Meanwhile, a former candidate and founding member of the party, Mr. George Ayisi-Boateng has denied media reports that he would contest for the Regional chairmanship position describing the rumor as untenable and a figment of someone's imagination.
According to him, he has no interest in the position and has never considered the idea of contesting for any position in the party.
"I would continue to serve the party in diverse ways as a founding member but to contest for a position, no way," he stated.
