President John Mills has declared an emphatic landslide victory ahead of the July primaries that will elect a flag-bearer for the National Democratic Congress.
“I will win by a land slide. It will be mine in the primaries and ours in 2012,” President John Mills declared to hundreds of party bigwigs, delegates, fanatic supporters at an official launching of his campaign ahead of the party’s primaries in July.
In what might easily pass for a rally, President Mills’ address was preceded by unalloyed declarations, solidarity from some party colossuses who had either been in the front-line of the government business or were at the fringes.
Vice President John Mahama who was the chairman of the occasion, Education Minister Betty Mould Iddrisu, Cecilia Johnson, had taken turns to pledge their eternal allegiance and unflinching support for Mills who they describe as honest and savior of the NDC.
They sang, danced and set the kuku hill office of the President which has been swarmed by hundreds of party supporters into absolute frenzy.
Touched by the energy, emotions and words of comfort, assurances and commitment from his supporters and admirers, the president could not help but return the favour.
"I am particularly gratified and honoured that all our colleagues have come to lend me support and thank you for the overwhelming support that you have given me this day," he said.
“...I also want to express my deepest gratitude to the officials and footsoldiers of this great party through whose resilience this party survived when it was in opposition.”
He said even though some of these officials were “imprisoned”, “brutalized,” “humiliated” and stripped of their constitutional right in opposition, they stuck with the party because of the love for the party and mother Ghana.
He thanked them for their resilience, assuring that their toils have and will never be in vain.
“I am not here today to give you my credentials and tell you what I will do when elected. I am already working and you know what I am capable of doing,” he said.
“…My brothers and sisters you need not worry because I am going to win by a land slide victory,” he assured.
He said the victory will be without disrespect, fabrication, mudslinging to his opponents.
“The contest is not about who can hurl insults the fastest. The contest is about who has the ability to help raise the standard of living of our people. To be able to lift our people from the quagmire of poverty,” he said, adding, “Atta Mills will always pursue and practice those values which will bring our country together and set lasting examples especially to the younger ones.”
He said the NDC has a legacy to protect- a legacy built through the blood and toil of many people some of whom have departed from this earth.
“We all need to protect this legacy and let it last for many years” he said but stressed this legacy is not the exclusive preserve of any individual.
President John Mills also promised not to lose focus on his Better Ghana Agenda stating he will work assiduously to retain the NDC in power.
The occasion was also used to inaugurate the National and Regional campaign team of the Atta Mills 2012.
