The Executive Secretary of the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG), Samson Asaki Awingobit, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to immediately terminate the remaining contract between the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Strategic Mobilization Ghana Limited (SML).
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, Mr. Awingobit expressed concern that despite a presidential directive in April 2024 suspending SML’s upstream petroleum and mineral resources contract—following serious concerns raised in The Fourth Estate’s investigative reports and a subsequent KPMG audit—SML continues to receive payments of over GH¢1.43 million monthly under the downstream petroleum contract.
According to him, at a time when the government is working to eliminate financial waste and stabilise the economy, these payments represent a significant drain on national resources.
He argued that the funds being paid to SML could instead be used to build schools, hospitals, and roads, or to ease the cost of doing business in the country.
Mr. Awingobit urged all stakeholders to join forces and pressure the government to terminate the remaining contract with SML.
