In a highly coordinated and successful raid, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Special Operations Team has dismantled a suspected all-female drug peddling network operating in Tamale, arresting three key suspects involved in the distribution of illicit substances, including opioid and cannabis products.
The arrests on Monday, December 15, are part of an ongoing intensified campaign to curb the growing menace of drug abuse and trafficking in the Northern Region.
The operation, which spanned several strategic locations, including markets and taxi ranks in Tamale, began with routine patrols in Kalpohini, a populous suburb in the regional capital.
The first breakthrough came when the team encountered Aisha, who was operating a provision shop in Kalpohini as a front for her illicit activities.
Upon searching Aisha, officers found her in possession of a significant quantity of opioid medication: six sachets of tramadol tablets.
Additionally, an unregistered motorbike, suspected to be used for drug distribution, was impounded.
During the immediate arrest, Aisha's alleged accomplice, Asia, was also taken into custody at the shop.
Following the initial arrests, a targeted search of Aisha's private residence was conducted.
This search yielded further incriminating evidence, leading to the discovery of quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp (cannabis), suggesting the operation involved multiple classes of prohibited substances.
The investigation quickly extended to the supply chain after Aisha disclosed the identity of the alleged intermediary: Hawabu, who reportedly acted as the crucial link between Aisha and the main supplier of the drugs.
Hawabu was subsequently tracked down and apprehended by the team.
All three suspects—Aisha, Asia, and Hawabu—have been taken to the Sakasaka Police Station, where they are currently being held pending further investigation.
The seized evidence, including the tramadol, dried cannabis, and the unregistered motorbike, has been officially handed over to the investigation team at the station.
The successful execution of the arrests underscores the professionalism and dedication of the IGP’s elite team, particularly in combating the rampant abuse of pharmaceutical opioids, which has become a major public health concern in Northern Ghana.
ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, a spokesperson for the IGP Special Operations Team, affirmed the significance of the operation:
"The successful conduct of this operation demonstrates the commitment, vigilance, and professionalism of the IGP Special Operations Team," he said.
ASP Bawah added that the operation has reinforced public confidence in law enforcement, showcasing the team's dedication to combating drug peddling and promoting a safer community.
ASP Bawah added that the team would continue to ensure the region is clear of criminals.
