Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has pledged to introduce 24-hour passport services to improve efficiency and reduce delays in passport processing.
Speaking on TV3 on Saturday, 8th February, he emphasised the need for a more responsive and citizen-friendly passport system.
“It is unacceptable for Ghanaians to endure long waiting periods for passports. My vision is to establish a 24-hour service that ensures swift and reliable passport issuance,” he stated.
Ablakwa, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, was sworn into office on Friday, 7th February.
He acknowledged the frustrations many Ghanaians face in obtaining passports and assured the public that urgent reforms would be implemented.
“We need a modern, efficient passport system that meets international standards. I am committed to making this a reality,” he added.
He further explained that leveraging technology and streamlining administrative processes would be key to achieving this goal.
“We will invest in digital solutions, expand processing centres, and enhance service delivery to ensure that passports are issued within the shortest possible time,” he noted.
Ablakwa also hinted at a decentralisation strategy to make passport services more accessible across the country.
As he assumes office, the Foreign Affairs Minister called for collaboration between government agencies, the private sector, and the public to make the 24-hour passport service a success.
He assured Ghanaians that his ministry would prioritise efficiency and transparency in passport issuance.
“This is about serving the people better. We will do whatever it takes to make passport acquisition a seamless process for all Ghanaians,” he concluded.
