The IMANI Center for Policy & Education has officially launched the search for the next generation of African leaders, announcing the opening of applications for its prestigious 12th Students and Young Professionals African Liberty Academy (SYPALA).
The flagship pan-African initiative seeks to convene the continent's brightest undergraduate students and recent graduates to deliberate on strategies for building a more resilient and inclusively governed Africa.

As the continent navigates a complex global landscape, marked by the economic ripples of the Middle East conflict and shifting oil prices, the 2026 seminar aims to foster homegrown solutions to Africa's most pressing policy challenges.
The Merit-Based Challenge
In a departure from traditional academic requirements, IMANI has announced that acceptance into the 12th cohort will be determined solely on the strength of a competitive essay.
This year’s topic tasks applicants with identifying a specific policy or business innovation capable of enhancing economic resilience in a chosen African country.
Applicants must provide a rigorous analysis covering:
- The Current Challenge: A detailed look at a specific hurdle facing an African nation.
- The Proposed Solution: A clear explanation of how their chosen innovation functions.
- Implementation Obstacles: An honest assessment of at least one major barrier to success.
Successful candidates will be granted full scholarships to attend a four-day residential seminar.
The package includes full accommodation and the rare opportunity to engage directly with a world-class faculty of policy experts, economists, and governance specialists.
The seminar is designed to provide "analytical depth" and "originality of thought", qualities that IMANI identifies as essential for those committed to advancing the "good news about Ghana’s opportunities" and the wider African economic story.
Application Details
IMANI is encouraging qualified candidates from across the African continent to apply before the mid-year deadline.
- Application Deadline: 30 April 2026
- Submission Portals: RA@imanighana.org or info@imanighana.org
- Target Group: High-performing undergraduates and recent graduates.
Now in its 12th year, SYPALA has become a cornerstone of leadership development in Africa.
By focusing on "stewardship and service", themes echoed in recent state addresses, the academy continues to build a network of young professionals equipped to lead Africa toward a more stable and prosperous future.
