Policy think-tank IMANI Ghana says the National Communications Authority (NCA) must extend the deadline for the registration of mobile SIM cards.
This according to Executive Director of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe, is to allow for the registration of remaining subscribers.
The NCA has given an ultimatum for the registration of all existing SIM cards by June 30, which is only a few days away.
Failure to meet the deadline will result in the permanent loss of the number.
But the IMANI boss told Joy News the authority must be ready to extend the date if it wants to achieve the paramount purpose of registration.
According to him, reliable information indicates that close to 1.5 million subscribers of MTN have yet to be registered.
Other telecom companies have similar challenges, he noted.
Even though the NCA has described the call for extension as legitimate, its Deputy Director in Charge of Corporate Affairs told Joy News the authority will not extend the June deadline.
Mawuko Zormelo said over 97 percent of SIM cards have so far been registered and he expects the few outstanding to be registered within the remaining days.
He however urged mobile phone users to check their registration to ensure the information they provided is correct.
