Poultry farmers now have the opportunity to buy imported yellow maize to supplement the locally-produced one as feed for their birds.
The farmers had expressed concerns about the shortage of locally-produced maize resulting price hikes. But Government through the National Food Buffer Stock Company is to now supply almost 300 thousand bags of yellow maize to the farmers at a cost of 37 cedis per bag.
President of the Ghana National Association of Poultry Farmers, Kwadwo Asante tells JOY BUSINESS even though the supply is timely, the cost is rather high.
“Its good news but the price is high because the Deputy Minister announced last w eek they would sell it for 35 cedis per bag but we are now told being is 37 cedis” he said.
NAFCO’s Chief Executive, Eric Osei Wusu however argues, the price is moderate compared to the prevailing market price.
“The prevailing world market price is very high and so we think the price is very moderately. Agricultural Development Bank quoted for us, 45 cedis per bag but we negotiated and it came down to the 37 cedis. So we think it is a fair price farmers should be happy about especially when it is above 42 cedis on the local market” he explained.
