School-based girl-child co-ordinators have observed that inadequate parental support and some customary practices were causing poor enrolment and retention of girls in schools in the Fanteakwa District.
Making the observations at a day’s workshop on girl-child education at Ahomahomasu in the District at the weekend, the teachers called for a stop to early betrothal of girls in marriage, girl’s trafficking and its related customary practices that affect girl child education.
The Fanteakwa District Girls’ Education Co-ordinator, Ms Justina Ansah urged head teachers to revive girls’ clubs in their schools and be taught issues affecting their lives.
She also urged parents not relent in their support to educate their female children.
The District Welfare Officer, Ms Ellen Osei asked teachers to be gender-sensitive and treat issues concerning the girl-child with care.
Mrs Harriet Comfort Asamoah, Assistant Director for Basic Education in the district said inaccessible roads and unfavourable residential accommodation in the remote areas, was discouraging the acceptance of postings by female teachers in the area.
