Supreme Court Judge, Justice Professor Henrietta Mensa-Bonsu, says she is not surprised by the ever increasing interest expressed by young people to pursue a law degree.
According to her, while pursuing a law course has always looked fascinating for a lot of people, the fascination in recent years has grown a notch higher.
This she says is evidenced by the increasing number of admissions into law courses in institutions across the country. For example, in 2021 an unprecedented 2,820 students applied to enter the Ghana School of Law out of which an initial 790 and an additional 499 were admitted.
She noted that this increased fascination can be attributed to recent national events that have pushed lawyers to the forefront, especially in the media.
“No, not surprised. All these bright young people, mostly young men appearing on TV and throwing around theories, it’s bound to make law look fascinating. It has always been, I must say. But now, it’s even more fascinating.
“In our parents’ generation and I suppose in mine, many people read law while working, so that when they retired from the public service they could have careers in law. But I think the young people now their aims may be different.
“But I suspect that seeing all these jazzy looking young people throwing around big words and big ideas and so on, have to have some attraction for young people, so maybe that’s the reason,” she said.
