Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo has waded into the contentious discussions on the creation of 45 new constituencies, describing as dangerous those kicking against the process.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP has vehemently opposed the Electoral Commission for its insistence of creating the additional constituencies. They have now sought solace in civil society groups and religious organisations to implore the EC to rescind its decision.
Meanwhile, a motion seeking to restrain Parliament from considering the controversial CI 78 which is to legalize the creation of the additional constituencies, was heard this morning at the Supreme Court and the case was adjourned.
But Mr Ofosu Ampofo - contributing to discussions on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Wednesday, cautioned the main opposition party against what he said was their attempt to stop the EC from carrying out its constitutional mandate.
He called the bluff of the NPP, whose executives have argued the timing for the creation of the new constituencies was too short to allow the parties to prepare for their primaries.
The minister said independent candidates will run for those constituencies if opposition parties fail to elect representatives for those areas.
He wondered why the NPP cannot trust the EC to do a good job while the commission has in the past undertaken similar activities and succeeded.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the NPP was being hypocritical because all political parties were given ample time to elect their representatives and thus urged the party to stick to the “rules of the game”.
“Let’s give (the EC) their independence to operate because anything less than that will rather be undermining the Constitution,” he insisted.
