Economist and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics at the University of Ghana, Dr. Twumasi Baffour Priscilla says Ghana needs to industrialize its economy to ensure job creation and the welfare of citizens.
Discussing NPP and NDC's manifesto on JoyNews' Newsfile, she said, "We expect any job creation agenda of a political party to be critically focusing on productive enterprises in the country. So they could start, grow and provide sustainable jobs".
Focusing on the growth of the economy, she emphasised that decent jobs are mainly created in the industrial sector.
"The growth path of Ghana has done considerably well for the last two decades despite challenges faced in the world market", she added.
However, a problem she identified and highlighted was the economy being led by the service sector which constitutes 66 percent of employed people who fall in the vulnerable working range.
According to Dr Twumasi, this is a problem because most service jobs are informal and not labour intensive.
"As a country that requires high employment rates, we need to go industrial.
"The problem in Ghana is not people lacking jobs rather what kind of jobs people are doing," she said.
The Senior Lecturer concluded her submission by praising the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democracy Congress (NDC) for taking a critical look at the industrial sector in their respective manifestoes.
"Both NDC and NPP manifestos agree job creation is a multi-sectoral approach, you need to be very intentional about any attempt that you make at all levels to create jobs", she said.
While the NDC says it will initiate the big-push initiative to invest about $10 billion in the industrial sector to create a million jobs when voted into power, the NPP plans to deepen its One District One Factory policy.
This, according to the governing party, will be done by investing about $100 to $200 million in the bauxite and iron ore industry in the northern parts of Ghana to create more jobs.
